Our journey through the most suggestive places easily reachable from Boffenigo continues, for a holiday in the great outdoors, surrounded by culture and beauty. The Garda area offers lots of opportunities to discover the history and traditions of all the small towns that make it a fabulous and unique place in the eyes of the world.
A few weeks ago we visited Bardolino and Torri del Benaco, while today we are setting off to discover two delightful towns, just a few minutes away from our Hotel: Garda and Lazise.
Garda
Garda’s lakeside, one of the most beautiful and with some of the best facilities, is ideal to enjoy romantic sunsets, visit the weekly outdoor market, and walk around the small marina, full of typical Italian boats. Along its streets you can admire amazing villas and buildings, such as Villa Alberini, Villa Canossa and Palazzo dei Capitani, where years ago the Fishermen Corporation used to meet. The small town also hosts Pieve of Santa Maria Assunta, one of the oldest churches in the area.
In addition to the old town centre, there are many other unmissable spots: Punta San Vigilio, the peninsula with Baia delle Sirene, the bay renowned for its clear waters and a popular destination with distinguished visitors such as Winston Churchill and the Prince of Wales, and Rocca di Garda, the hill that dominates the town and offers one of the best views of the lake. A medieval castle and the Eremo di San Giorgio, a hermitage founded in 1663, are both built on the hill.
Lazise
Wondering round the narrow streets of Lazise is like travelling back in time: Scaligero Castle. When you enter the walls that surround the old town centre, you will be stunned by the view of Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, its checked pavement, and the lively little port with the local fishermen’s boats.
On one side of the port are old traditional houses, on the other, the Romanesque Church of San Nicolò, who according to legend tamed a tremendous storm, and since then has become the patron saint of sailors and fishermen. Opposite the church, Lazise’s old historical building with its suggestive architecture: the Dogana Veneta. Originally built for ship maintenance, today it hosts a convention centre.
Small towns, great beauty: with history and nature, this is how Lake Garda never ceases to amaze us.
